The Death of Diana
Diana is in the spotlight again because of the ongoing inquest regarding the 1997 Paris car accident which killed her, Dodi Al-Fayed and the acting security manager of the Hôtel Ritz Paris, Henri Paul. Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was the only survivor.
Princess Diana had Sun and Mercury in Cancer so she had a traditional side and valued family, tradition and security. Her Moon and the ruler of her chart, Jupiter, were in Aquarius so she also loved to shake it up, flaunt tradition, shock the stodgy and poke a stick at her adversaries.
Diana’s birth chart showed that a sudden, violent death was very possible. (Eighth house ruled by Moon opposite Uranus, and Uranus conjunct Mars and Pluto)
For about two years, transitting Pluto had been squaring the Mars and Pluto in Diana’s chart. A Pluto square Mars period is a time when there are powerful energies within the individual, often leading to a feeling of invincibilty and risk-taking. It is also a time when the individual attracts powerful adversaries. There is a real possibility of physical harm during a Pluto/Mars transit.
The Timing of the Accident
Pluto moves very slowly, crossing the same point several times so you can’t time events with Pluto. One of the best ways to see when the effect of the transit is actually realized is to look at the Solar Return — the chart constructed for the time the Sun returns to exactly where it was at the time of birth. (i.e the birthday) This chart describes the nature of the following year.
The first thing to note is that Mars is on the Ascendant, square the Sun, a strong sign of risk.
Diana’s Solar Return
Princess Diana Solar Return Chart
To move through the Solar Return, you start at the Ascendant and move approximately one degree every day. (example – in this chart, the ascendant is 2 degrees Libra and the cusp of the Second house is 25 degrees Libra, so Diana would have been dealing with first house issues for about 23 days.)
At the time of the accident, the Solar Sun had moved into the area of the chart ruled by Pluto opposite the Moon. This is a powerful aspect but one that would appear often in Solar Returns without indicating a tragic death. In this case however, both Pluto and the Moon square Mars in the house of death or transformation in Diana’s birth chart and it appears more ominous.
At the time of the accident, the Sun had travelled 57 degrees and 56 minutes from the natal position. When you add 57 degrees and 56 minutes to the Ascendant, you arrive at 29 degrees Scorpio, 58 minutes – exactly, to the minute, opposite the Moon at 29 Taurus 58.
Accident or Murder
Pluto was entering the 12th house of Diana’s birth chart, a sign that powerful unseen forces were at work. These forces could be secret enemies, or enemies working in secret, and they could also be unconscious forces in Diana herself. She predicted she would die or be badly injured in a traffic accident yet she wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Risk-taking?
Most conspiracy theories arise from the fact that Diana, mother of the future king of England, was openly having an affair with Dodi Al-Fayed, a Muslim. Diana, with her Aquarian nature, would not have any reservations about religious differences and would have truly enjoyed the fact that she was shocking those with more traditional views. She also would have known that her new relationship was bound to raise powerful forces against her.
Pluto squares are power struggles not careless accidents. The question is if the ‘power’ refers to the paparazzi that she tried to use and control or the powers behind the throne that tried to control her.
